It usually a good idea to know what you're talking about, so since you're having issues on simple terms like GB, RAM and what not, then there are some useful links at the bottom of my post you should definetly read for a quick pick up on PC's.
Before you buy a new laptop, I would recommend you to clean it up. There are several useful programs that can help you, their both efficient and clean, as well free. Run them and clean any crap of your PC, so that is there's anything slowing it down, will be deleted. The links are at the bottome too.
If you're going after a laptop, you really need to consider one thing and that is that a Laptop will always be 25% more expensive then any Desktop one can buy. So if you're after gaming and such, Laptops are not your best option, especially on how things are tightly packed together in such a small thing.
If you want to watch movies, store loads of files on you laptop, and is school friendly, then I would recommend for you to check out the Dell site. They offer some of the cheapest (as well best) laptops a person could want. Most of those laptops are able to play low end games (such as Counter-Strike) but anything higher then that is not possible (unless you plan of wasting loads of money in buying one of the most expensive Dell ones).
All in all, I say first try cleaning your PC, and if that doesn't work, go ahead and buy one. As I said, go Dell...it's better and more reliable.
DELL XPS
or
Alienware
yea a dell xps or if you got the money an alein ware laptop would be worth it.
If you can't afford DELL or Alienware, then look for AMD X2 dual core processors @ 2.0 or higher GHZ
Or Intel duo core processors @ 2.0 or higher GHZ
Something with atleast 1GB, but if you want to be safe get into a 2GB Memory of DDR Ram (Range).
200GB /16MB Buffer serial ATA Hard Drive, not to many people go past 150GB unless there game fanatics or music freaks!
SLI enable MotherBoard look for NVIDIA brands, and NVIDIA 7900GT or 8800GTX graphic cards.
Thats a pretty standard but well suffisticated update!
