I can see why it was dirt cheap...
Is the computer screen ALWAYS bright white, or is that only when it is in Windows? Some laptops have keys that you can use to adjust the brightness of the screen, by pressing "Fn" and another key, usually an "F" key or one of the number keys. There should be a little sun icon on one of them.
If it has no keys, then you may be able to adjust the brightness through Windows. Right-click the desktop, select Properties, click the Settings tab, and click "Advanced". See if there is an option for adjusting the brightness / gamma levels.
If al of this fails, the screen is likely shot, but you may still be able to use the computer by hooking up a monitor to it. Use the VGA port, either on the side or in the back. You may have to use a key combination to switch to the new monitor.
Well, I'm no computer expert so I don't know, but I really suggest that you get a new computer if your going to fix it. Your probably going to have a hard time finding someone who knows whats wrong without having to spend money, and even if you do get it fixed, it's probably going to run like crap. I know you can get really cheap desktops for like, $300 or $400. If you saved up for a while, you could get that money. (And then theres always ebay)
