My laptop won't come on,but you hear it running what could be the problem?

can you see anything? because as the first answer states it can be the inverter or bulb, BUT if it were, then if u shine a light on the screen u can faintly see everything. If you can plug your laptop into an external source and its working then you need a new screen.

it is possible that the lcd screen may have died, or the inverter cable that runs from the monitor to the lcd may have gone bad or came loose due to heat. to see if the laptop is still working correctly connect it to an external monitor using the vga port on the back (if you laptop has one, it should almost all laptops do). good luck.
reboot your system, un-plugged your laptop from ac adapter, remove the battery, then return it back, then turn on your laptop, just wait if the windows will start, then if does, turn off again or re-start so that it will save that state. otherwise, run the windows into safe mode...
When you turn on the computer, if you get nothing on the screen the screen might be the problem. To find out if that is the problem use a separate monitor and run the correct cable from your laptop to the secondary screen.(you will see a fifteen (female) prong plug in. (The icon near the plug looks like a monitor screen square with a line on either side. If the secondary monitor works then your laptop screen is kaput! Cheaper to buy a new laptop than to replace the monitor.(self experience) If that turns out to be the case your old laptop is still good if you want to buy a cheap monitor for it. You can use it as backup.
