The new Dell 1420 comes in a durable alloy case with all the top options for connectivity and would be a good choice.

A Bargain Hunter's Fantasy Laptop (Inspiron 1420 Review from PCMag.com - 6/26/2007)
The Dell Inspiron 1420 is destined to populate the homes of school-bound teens, sophisticated and unsophisticated computer users, and just about anybody who is looking for a terrific deal. The laptop's look has changed (for the better), and just because it's priced at $1,099 (direct) doesn't mean you'll get shafted with cheap processing parts. It's one of the few laptops, if not the only one, that gives you discrete graphics, a surplus of memory, different-color frames, and a host of other features that usually cost extra.
If you're travelling, what you want is small and light. I don't know much about what's out there, but I've got a Toshiba A6 and that's light enough for me to carry around all day with no problem at all. The A8 is slightly bigger, but it's also a bit cheaper. I'm sure there are cheaper computers out there, but I personally can't vouch for their size and weight. If you go to a few companies' websites, they should tell you the dimensions for each model there.
don't make this so complicated...get the best for the money. most ram, most bus speed, amd 5600+ processor or cuo 2 duo quad/extrem...if you want to use it wirelessly then make sure it comes with a wifi card installed or you'll have to buy and install it separately (60 bucks, easy to do).and make sure with your hotel that they provide wifi or Ethernet connection or it would be useless to take it with..if traveling outside the country buy a surge protector converter.don't just use any converter...that will fry your new laptop.get the one that the company/store recommends.
id go with hp or compaq they are by far the best and lightest systems
why don't you rent a sidekick 3 from a rent-a-center? :)
If your travelling youll want light weight and compact. The hp tx1000z series is a good choice at under 4 pounds. Get the amd TL 64 processor, touch screen, web cam, verizon 740 wireless card(no hot spot needed, just a cell phone or a hot spot) and the finger print reader for security. The screen turns up to 180 degrees.it works as a tablet,You can actually write notes for e-mail, files or presentations. You could actually show your family back home what youre doing in a cafee in Paris or the panoramic view atop the Eifel Tower with you in it live!
