just hook up the router to the DSL modem, and then hook up the PC to the router via ethernet cable. the PC shouldn't be affected. If the laptop is running wireless, and the router is wireless too - you shud be able to connect it.. let me know if you have questions! :)
you can a buy a separate network card (802.11n) which gives you faster transfer rate but the router must also be able to provide that speed.

You could get a wireless router that could not only connect your laptop, but you could connect the home PC to the router itself. Don't know where your from, so I'd recommend to use a site like http://www.moneysupermarket.com/broadban... and have a look at whats available in your area and at what speeds. Theres also a guide to broadband on it if you get confused.
