The PC has better hardware but the laptop has a better internet connection.
There are so many things involved in this. but i think normally your desktop being robust... is designed for computations... that is the reason why it superceeds ur laptop for normal working. but normally most of the laptops come with Gigabit network whereas most of the onboard PC ethernet cards are fast ethernet. this may be one reason. i.e. Gigabit card will give better results while downloading than a Fast Ethernet card.
Since the desktop is 4 years old, the processor is probably about 1/4 the speed of the laptop. Also the video memory is less, the RAM is a slower speed and the disk drive write access is probably slower as well as the RPM.
