Laptops/notebooks that seemingly wont turn on?

Once I had to set up for a presentation and the notes were on this computer (a notebook/laptop) that had started up but it went into some sort of mode like hibernate or sleep and no amount of tapping the keys or anything else would resurrect it. Can you tell me how to solve that problem? I couldnt even press the power button (the circle with the line through it)

sometimes dropping the battery out and unplugging them will wake them up ..
Right Click on your screen
Select properties
Screen saver
Select Power
Hibernate and then deselect it.
