I'm trying to buy a Laptop and am confused between the Processor types. Whats the best processor for a laptop?

I'm trying to pick a good laptop for a student. I bought one with Intel Core Duo then realized that it is different than the Core duo 2. I was a bit disappointed to learn that there was a better processor than mine. Now, I don't understand how it works and need explanatation. What is the top processor for AMD and for Intel - and what are the factors that determine how good a processor is?

Also, on a side note - what makes a laptop suitable for student use?

Answers:
Core 2 duo is the tops in speed capacity and battery usage. Further there is a 2000 series a 5000 series and a 7000 series. So the core 2 duo T7700 is tops. AMD is slightly behind but is heavily discounted. The Turion X 2 is their best.

In choosing a LT for college go along with the most popular brands, right now Dell and HP.
For student usage the current laptop is sufficient. If you think of for high end programming (servers etc) You should go for Core duo2.
