It really depends on who u are and what u want to do with it. If u don't know much about computers u should get the macbook.
You can get a dell laptop for half the price of the macbook that will easily perform as well.
And It will run almost every single software title on the planet too.
The macbook is nice, and I wouldnt' mind having one - but it would only be as a second machine next to my AMD based dell laptop.
It depends on what you use it for. Macbooks are great for word processing and email and they also have less viruses. However, not all software works on the Mac, and price is the thing too. If you bought a regular PC, all software would work and your dad would be happier that you picked a cheaper computer. It is just as equally good at email and processing and better at games.
So it depends on you...
Personal opinoion, macs are nice, well put together, different, and good at graphics.
Otherwise, just stick with the normal laptop, I like the AMD processors, i have the TL-56 and it works well.

It comes with all the software you need (iPhoto, iTunes, iDvd, iMovie, Quicktime etc.) It also has Safari and Garage Band. You can add Open Office for free or buy and educational version of Words in order to get a word processor. The MacBook is wi-fi ready out of the box and is ready to use. It has a built in webcam. The main advantage, no viruses,worms, or malware. Instead of you or your dad worrying about those, you can use the computer worry free. Buy a MacBook! Oh if you tell Apple you are going to college, they'll throw in a free iPod Nano.

I'd also like to add that you can even install Windows and/or Linux in addition to Mac OS X on the MacBook, which essentially means there's not a program out there the MacBook can't run. You can use Boot Camp, which lets you run either Windows or OS X and you restart the laptop to go between them, or what's called a "virtualization" program, which lets you run Windows while you're already in OS X, as if Windows were just another program on your desktop.
