Can anyone give me some information about wireless internet cards?
Do I have to pay for extra service? I already have internet access at home, its just not a wireless modem.
Please help.
Answers:
1st you'll need a wireless router (approx $50). The wireless router is connected to the broadband (cable or dsl) modem by a standard ethernet cable, the same cable that your computer is connected to the broadband modem with. The wireless router takes the broadband signal from your modem and transmits it through the air on a 2.4ghz signal, much like how a cordless phone works.
2nd you'll need a wireless card for your computer, if your computer doesn't have one built in. The wireless card is essentially an antenna that picks up the signal from your router, and any other wireless router within range, and allows your computer to have complete internet access just like you would if it was plugged directly into the broadband modem.
It's really quite simple to hook up and use. The router will come with software and instructions that will allow you to set it up easily and set up a password and other security that will only allow your computer to connect to it, even if others detect your wireless signal.
Wireless type G (802.11G) is the most common nowadays. Wireless type N (802.11N) is the newest type, it will get you even longer range, but is more expensive. Wireless G's range is more than sufficient, you will have a signal throughout your house and then some. I can detect, on my computer, a wireless G signal from a neighbors house, 3 houses away (approx 150 yds. away.)
If it is compatible with your laptop, which most are, then you just plug in and install any necessary drivers that come with it and you're ready to connect wirelessly. If you don't have a wireless modem you will need to buy one that will be compatible with the wireless card. That's the only additional expense you should have. It's all pretty easy. Go with wireless-g if you can.
Wireless-N is a new technology and still overpriced. Wireless-G will give you more than enough speed (more than your ISP will utilize) so it is more than sufficient. Here are some good products (I have the same router and it works great):

Just make sure your laptop does not have a built in wireless card...most laptops made within the past few years all come with them standard...
i suggest a 802.11n wireless card or usb adapter. and yes you would need a wireless router plugged into your modem.
