In that case I think you should. I have a 17' laptop (toshiba) myself I like it. If you can find a case to hold it like a business bag it'll be amazing and worth it.
TOO BIG, IF THATS WHAT YOUR ASKING
Sure.
As long as it is for home, then get a 17" laptop.
It is better for movies and stuff
I would they are nice for viewing dvd movies on and you dont go blind trying to see the screen
it is somewhat large. do you really need to carry it arround? you can buy a comp.(monitor and base) the same size and it will cost you alot less then a whole laptop. up to you. i am beyond happy with my 15.4 in laptop
no, don't listen to those people. you know what your needs for a laptop are, and what you can carry around. and honestly if you want it mostly for home a 17" sounds fine. but if you are using it as a desktop replacement then this is a rather large investment, because you want to spec it out pretty good so it will last you a years, at least 2 GHZ processor, at least 1 gig of ram at least 200 gig harddrive. i think if mostly it is to be used at home then a 17" is perfect for you. if you plan to take it out a lot, then it would be mismatched, but since that isnt' the case, go and get it.
That is huge... Mine is 14" and sometimes I wish I had a smaller one, especially carrying it between classes.
I've got a 17" laptop, and I LOVE it! It is heavy, but thats mostly due to the hardware in the computer, not just the screen itself. One bonus I've found to the larger screen is that there's room for a 10key pad to the right of the keyboard, like on a normal keyboard.

Mine is mostly for home, but on occasion i do tote it to friends' houses or whatever. I think it would be a little too cumbersome to take to a starbucks on a whim.

I hope the price of Alienware's 19" laptop drops enough for me to consider it when it's time to replace my current system.
It is a bit big and I don't carry it around too much...but the screen size is so important if you spend a lot of time on one. I haven't been sorry. I have a Dell Inspiron 9300 and it is perfect for home use, carrying from one room to the other.. I find I only use it about two hours or so without being plugged in and that is about the life of the battery time but some people say they get 3 or even a little more. But even with this large screen, unless you are a complete
wimp..lol...it is fine and if you are a man, no problem at all.
I have a Toshiba m65 with a 17 inch wide screen and love it.
no its not to big to Cary
i would recommend a 17" anytime i love mine
I suppose there is a slight trade off, a 17in laptop might consume more electricity than a 15.4 in screen, so the battery might run low quicker.

The tradeoff with a 17inch is that you get a bigger screen for working on, games, movies, and also a normal keypad on the right instead of one that you have to use NumLock for, which can be difficult to use because you have to switch back and forth if you want to use the letters on the same key. But, you can buy an external USB keypad so this would solve the problem of the NumLock.

If it is mainly for home use, like you say, rather than mobile, then go with the 17in because you will probably use the AC adapter more often than the battery. And if you program, draw, watch movies, play games then the 17in screen gives you more desktop space to work with.

I think Tablet PCs allow you to turn the screen vertical as well as leave it horizontal, so you can read PDF pages easier, rather than horizontal like it normally is on a laptop. So you might also consider a Tablet PC.

If you decide to go with the 15.4in screen, then you can still get a second 17" LCD monitor to plug into the laptop monitor port, in addition to the laptop screen, and vice versa.

You might also want to consider getting at least 1GB of memory, 3G,Bluetooth enabled, and IEEE 1394 port.
Yes. 17" laptops are the best.
