Sound keeps shutting off?

My computer speakers sound fine. But if I put it on mute for any length of time I will have to reboot the whole system to get the sound to work again. I have Windows XP.

I have similar problems (a known problem for my computer) and updating the sound drivers didn't work. But you may want to try updating the drivers for your sound card first. If you have had your computer for a long time, you may also want to update your BIOS. Your computer manufacturer's website can tell you how to do that. And, if after all of that doesn't work, I found that the following works for me - unmute the sound. Mute it again and then unmute it again. If that doesn't work, try logging off (not rebooting) and then log back on again. Hope any of these suggestions will help you out. Good luck!
