I am going to buy my first notebook computer.?

Which brand is the best and why? what are some things that i shoud look for when buying a notebook?

Answers:
First of all you are already ahead because you said "first" notebook. It won't be your last so even if you make the biggest and worst purchase choice in your life... well, you won't have to live with it forever. In a few years you'll be migrating to another machine, that's just the way it is with computers. I'm on my 5th. :-)

Most of the off-the-shelf (Best Buy, Wal-Mart) machines are pretty good. Dell, HP. So unless you have specific needs like high-end gaming, just about any $500 notebook should serve you well. You'll want wireless, sometimes that's an extra, but except for Microsoft Office, I'm not sure what else to recommend. I've had a Dell, Gateway, and Sony. I liked the Gateway best, but they were all fine. I don't like the touchpad, but I bought an external mouse to deal with that. Some have nicer speakers than others, but if you really care about audio, you'll use headphones. Get the biggest hard drive you can and the most memory without getting bumped into a higher-end machine. Some people care about the weight if they have to schlep it around, maybe that's something you'll want to consider. Good Luck!
The firs question you should be asking is why do you NEED a notebook. If you know why then finding out the other answers should be easy. Do you really need a notebook or is it that you just want a notebook computer?
What will you use it for and how much do you want to spend? If you want, if you post your zip code, I could even find a deal at a local store for you.
Get a macbook. By far the best. They run both windows AND Mac OS X. You want to look for a dual-core processor (the standard by now) AT LEAST 1GB of RAM, a 80GB hard drive (or more for pictures, videos, etc).

Check out this week's Consumer Reports. They rate the mid level laptops. Apple' MacBook Pro is the top rated.
You need to be more specific. It depends on many factor like:-
1> you want to play game, multimedia on it or not?
2> What operating system you want: XP, VISTA, MAC etc?
3> What is your budget?
4> Whether you want budget, ultra portable (light), or tough notebook. i.e. you will need to carry it for long time, will you be careful or want tough notebook etc.
I had three notebooks, I killed the first. It was a HP Compac. The two Dells I had are for the money very good. Do not get Windows Vista Home Basic on any brand you choose. Have no experience with higher grades of Vista. XP worked I down-graded.
use common knowledge, and keep a few things in mind.
!) what is the purpose of you computer?
if its games, then stick with a tower computer (the desktop in other words not a labtop) games need alot of processing power, and labtop is built for size, they arent made for eachother)
2) remeber a computer have a 2 year life span, after 2 years, then start expecting problems, if ur a idiot when it comes to computers, expect these problems sooner
3) ya... theres no number 3, just make sure its about 1GB of ram, and whatnot.. the details dont matter if u got the basics
just ask yourself if u really need it
