I have a Mac G4 laptop & I went to an apple store & a mac genius told me that the hard drive is failing. I need to replace the internal drive or he told me it was cheaper to buy an external firewire hard drive for the computer. He said you can get one that you can work straight out of. Right now I have an external USB hard drive, but you can't work out of it.. you can only store things. Does anyone know an external firewire Mac hard drive that I can WORK from?? I found these hard drives, but it doesn't specify. If anyone has 1 & knows for sure it works please let me know the name or include a link if possible. Thank you! 10 points to the best helper!

The only reason for a firewire drive is to boot from as is the case in your situation really you can take any harddrive and buy an external hard drive case with firewire and that will enable you to copy files over and boot from the external drive if the internal fails which means you can buy a normal 3.5" hard drive which will definatly be cheaper than replacing the laptop drive.
you can't boot from a USB drive.
only internal or firewire. Time to buy a firewire drive, or replace the internal drive.

YOU CAN BOOT FROM A FIREWIRE DRIVE, if it has an operating system on it.
CMS is fine... and cheap.
