Why does my dvd drive in my Dell Inspiron 8000 freeze up?

Hello everyone. Here is my question. I have a Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop. When I play a dvd in the dvd drive, the dvd will play for about 5 to 10 minutes or so, then the picture will freeze on me. The sound will continue to play but the video freezes. Initially I thought I needed to upgrade the ram from 256MB to 512MB, so I upgraded. Unfortunately that did not fix the problem.

Can someone provide me with some advice on what to do or perhaps a reason? I don't want to have to spend money on replacing the dvd drive only to figure that is not the problem. If you guys can help me out by providing some hopeful answers, I would be grateful. Thanks and take care.
