Im going through the same issue after I bought a crappy Laptop from Gateway with Vista. I sent it back asap..
The first thing I did was learn what all those technical terms mean. Once you know what they mean and what is okay, whats great, and what isnt worth buying, youll find laptop shopping much easier. Based upon what you wrote, you need some type on entainment laptop as well as busniess like or personal.
Im looking into HP's as well, as well as Sony's. Ive been reading reviews on Laptops that best suit me and going from there. Compare online at sites like CompUsa, BestBuy, Circuit City, and other electronice stores. If you can, go into stores and take a look at them and speak to a Sales Associate.
Im sorry I couldnt give you an exact laptop but this is what Im doing to be more a much smarter computer buyer, as well as asking opinions here..
I hear Mac are good and expensive, but HP is alittle but much cheaper. Go online and look at them, they have all kinds of different ones.
I have a compaq that has all the specs you indicated and it runs great. If you don't like compaq, try HP, Toshiba, or Dell. They all make good (some high end) laptops for good prices. You indicated that you need something that can hold alot of files and still run fast, well, I have heard that Vista takes alot of space and that there is hardly any room left for much more files. Most new laptops are being sold with it, but you should check with a sales associate to see if they have any laptops with XP. Good luck.
Get an Inspiron 1520 from dell.com
Forget Pentium 4 they are obsolete the top CPU is the intel core 2 duo. You are slightly out of date. A good choice would be the Dell 1520 with 2 GBs of RAM, 160 GBHD, and a NV8600GT video for games(X10 compatible).
