Depends on the screen size: your talking in Resolution here.
for a 15" laptop id be happy with 1440 but if I went to a 17 or (ghasp) a 19 inch youd expect there to be 1680.
But remember that larger screens and resolutions (or any combination of the two) will affect your battery life and performance, and laptops are already poor on extended battery life anyway.

Well both seem to have similar shape, as in wide screen. It all depends on if you want more resolution. With more resolution you have more desktop space, but everything will become smaller(Like text and icon size), and on a laptop with say a 15" screen things can be extremely small. I would say 1440x900 is good for a 17" laptop, maybe a 15".
I don't have any ideas.
I would get the 1680x1050 becouse of the battery life if the screen is to big the battery wont last as long as the small one
1680x1050 is the best to view. It also depends on how big is your screen.
