Intel's Core 2 Duo is better than anything AMD has out for laptops at the moment. So if ur spending over about 1k prolly more like 1100 for a laptop then go for intel, if not. Its kinda a wash on the standard dual core processors.
(Don't forget to get a protection plan, laptops are easy to break!)
go for a Lenovo (IBM thinkpad).
I would definitely get the Core 2 Duo. Look at HP or Dell for a standard laptop. If you are into gaming with it, maybe Asus or Alienware. Asus and Acer are very reliable and are more powerful than HP or Dell. There are also tons of custom build to order laptop sites on google. Type in "custom laptop" and go to the sites and custom build one to your liking. Cyberpowerpc.com has good, reliable ones for less than any HP.
I would highly recommend a Toshiba Satellite M65-S9092. It comes with Intel Centrino, which to me, is the best processor.
