Replacing RAM in HP Pavilion Laptop...?
I currently have two slots, each have 284 of RAM and my computer has a total of 384 of RAM.
I need 1 Gig.
How do I get that? What do I purchase/ask for?
Answers:
you will have to buy 2 x 512mb or 2 x 1gb sticks of ram if your laptop will support it. your sharing memory with your graphics adapter. that is why your memory is showing up in odd amounts. you currently have 2 x 256mb and are sharing 128mb for onboard graphics. if you upgrade to 2 x 512mb you will have 896mb for reported for programs and 128mb used by the graphics adapter. you can install up to 2gb of memroy
Look on the label of one of the existing chips all the info should be there.. There is no gaurantee that your motherboard will support 1 gig though.
what you'll need to buy is 2 sticks of 512mb or 1GIG DDR SO-DIMM to get 1GIG - 128MB (shared memory for your video card) or 2GIG - 128MB (shared memory for your video) of RAM.
What you basically want to say to your sales rep is that you need 2 sticks of ram for your laptop that uses the regular DDR, not DDR2.
here's a link for inexpensive ram.
