Since you mentioned new hard disk, my guess is that you have a new windows XP installed. All you have to do is find your dirver for your Ethernet controller. To do this, you better go to your laptop manufacturer site, search for menu buttons as: Support, Download, Drivers ect. find your model, download all of your drivers and install them. Or if you keep your original cd driver provided with your new laptop, you could get that and install all your drivers from it.
EDIT: Since you have asked the same question only asking for a video driver on a different post, I assume you are talking about the same Gateway laptop model: MX6447, so I will give you the same link to download your drivers:

Just download all of the drivers, install them one by one, and everything should be fine.
If you have DSL use the CD that came with it. install connection from it.
Check if the cables are connected properly. From http://fixit.in
you cant get online with a hard drive...
