Should I get a Sony Viao or Dell Laptop??
I think sony's are a bit more expensive, and I want to get a laptop that will do all the basic things I need, and play video games if possible as well.
I was just wondering if anyone knows what I should get (my budget is around 1500 at the most) and I would also like to know which laptop has the longest battery life.
Thanks a lot everyone

10 reasons to buy a DELL Laptop
1. I love trying to figure out if I am a Home Office or a Small Business. What if I am a large business run from my home? Yikes!!
2. I want to own technology that is at least 6 months out of date...it makes me feel safe. I think the world moves too fast. So I sure don't want my computer to move fast too.
3. I love a web site that requires seven pages of ordering to see my final price. I have nothing but time on my hands!
4. I enjoy having to fill out reams of paperwork to get the money I overpaid back in a rebate check. There is nothing like the feeling you get when you have loaned $200 of your money to a corporate giant for three months (Interest Free)
5. Paying so much extra for a laptop helps me to feel as if I have contributed to the economy.
6. I appreciate how hard I have to look around the DELL site just to see if the laptop has a USB port. DELL must figure that this weeds out the idiots from the rest of us. If I cant figure out were your specifications page is, then I am too dumb to own a DELL laptop to begin with. Keep that page buried, the strong will find it.
7. I like the fact that my technical support and customer service is redirected to the other side of the world. I like promoting a global economy.
8. Great idea selling my "on site" warranty service to the lowest bidder in my neighborhood. I think it is very nice you find work for the hardware technicians in my area that are not good enough to find work on their own. In addition, I like having this person in my house seeing all my other great toys. Maybe he can set the clock on my VCR for me.
9. DELL does not give me a free carry case. Good idea. That is also why I bought a car without rust proofing or bumpers.
10. I appreciate the fact DELL feels I only need free technical support for one year. Why would I want lifetime free support? You think I am an idiot or something? If I need help after one year, well then I deserve to pay for it.
Everyone wants a hot laptop, but this is ridiculous. DELL laptop burst into flame <http://www.redherring.com/article.aspx?a...
Anyways, Sony is much better than Dell performance wise any day of the year. If your budget is 1500, then I feel you can still manage to find a Vaio. Talking about the battery, get a 9cell Li-ion battery instead of the usual 6. That should make it stay longer. Cheers!
Well with Dell and Sony your paying extra for the name, if name brand is what your looking for i would go with Alienware.com
But i suggest you check out http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/

Aye, as the person after me stated vista has some compatibility issues, also it gives you much lower FPS (frames per second) on games. On your laptop make sure you have at least 2gigs of ram, a core2 duo and you should be set.
Go with Dell, but tell them you want Windows XP and not Vista. Vista isn't compatible with much yet. If you have favorite games, they won't run on Vista.
Dell is the one company that told Microsoft to take a hike when Microsoft insisted no one could sell XP any more. You don't want Vista for another two years.
Brand name on a computer doesn't matter...all PC's use either an Intel or AMD CPU, Intel, ATi, or nVidia GPU, usually a Broadcom WiFi chip, and a lot of standard components. The only difference is really just the name on the case.
The only thing to worry about in laptop purchases is the money, find the one that's best for your money, unless one particular brand has something you like, such as an extra large or high resolution screen or has a better graphics card than other brands, but buying by brand alone is pointless.
I am a computer consultant and have worked with many brands over the years.
Sony computer are expensive and unreliable.
Dells are much better -- both in reliability and support when you need something repaired.
In a computer magazine test a year or two ago, Sonys were rated the worst. No surprise to me. I've seen too many late-model Sony desktops and laptops go bad. Dells -- quite rarely.
Since you're using it at school, you need to balance size with computing power. These are some good parameters to follow: 14" screen, lower-end dual-core CPU, 2GB RAM, 6 lb. max weight, extra battery. The Inspiron 1402 looks pretty good.
Don't spend more than $1000 or get those extra warranty stuff -- it's better to save up that few hundred $$ and get a faster one 2 years from now. Get a security cable for it.
Google "Dell coupons" and get yourself a hot deal. Dell changes coupons every Thursday. Other tips;

Dell gives you more bang for the buck.
Sony is just for name.
The dell 1420 would be a good choice. The Sony CR line has been having issues with a loose battery. The Dell Inspiron has been getting great reviews;
A Bargain Hunter's Fantasy Laptop (Inspiron 1420 Review from PCMag.com - 6/26/2007)
The Dell Inspiron 1420 is destined to populate the homes of school-bound teens, sophisticated and unsophisticated computer users, and just about anybody who is looking for a terrific deal. The laptop's look has changed (for the better), and just because it's priced at $1,099 (direct) doesn't mean you'll get shafted with cheap processing parts. It's one of the few laptops, if not the only one, that gives you discrete graphics, a surplus of memory, different-color frames, and a host of other features that usually cost extra.
You should get a Sony Vaio instead of a Dell laptop.
