Toshiba Satellite: new harddrive not detected?

I have a late model toshiba satellite. the hard drive crashed when i tripped on the power cord and it fell off the coffee table. upon installing the rescue reboot disk provided by toshiba it couldn't finish the process as "there is a corruption on the disk" this would indicate that it is in fact a bad drive.

HOWEVER when i installed a new HDD and reattempted to do the same process with the toshiba reboot/recue disk it wouldn't get to the point were a status bar would appear.

I looked into the root menu bios and discovered that it is not detecting the HDD, the bios area for HDD MODE is set to "NOT USED" when I attempt to change it I cannot enter this field to change it.

I know that the HDD is connected, I know that it is a new HDD and not corrupted or broken, I know that the Toshiba restore disk is new.

Could this be a mother board or is there another way to change the parameters so that it detects the HDD(hard drive).
Thanks

First I would make sure the hard drive you installed is properly seated and connected as the old hard drive was. If the old hard drive used a carrier, a metal frame that converted the hard drive to proper connections of the motherboard, that you are still using that carriage and not simply plugging the new hard drive into place. If after you have verified everything is installed correctly and connected properly you still cannot get the system bios to recognize the new hard drive, remove the a/c power cord, remove the battery, and leave the system unpowered by any means for 30-45 minutes.

After which you can reinstall the battery and/or power cord, restart the computer and enter the bios. If the bios does not appear to have reset as it does not recognize the new hard drive, power down, again remove all sources of power. Now, somewhere near or in where the battery fits should be a small 2-3 pin connector with a plastic sleeve called a jumper connecting 2 of the pins, if your find it and it only has 2 pins, remove the jumper sleeve for about 10 seconds, then replace it. If the jumper switch has 3 pins, remove the sleeve from the 2 pins it currently connects, attach it so that it connects the middle and other pin that wasn't previously connected for about 10 seconds, then reposition the jumper sleeve back to the original setting. Wait the additional time without having any power attached yet again, then reattach the battery and/or A/C power cord and check again.

If at this point the bios still does not recognize the hard drive, there is something more serious wrong with the motherboard or it's connectors and you will need to seek professional help at either Toshiba or maybe another computer repair shop in your area.

In any event, since you have replaced your hard drive, more than likely your restore disk(s) will not work, most restore disks contain only a portion of the software that was on your laptop, the rest was stored in a hidden partition on the old hard drive that will not be there if the new hard drive was purchased anywhere else than toshiba directly with the explanation of what occurred and they sent you a replacement hard drive with that partition reinstalled.
