Why isn't the internet working on my lap top?

I just bought a lap top and I tried connecting my ethernet cable and phone line that I use for my desk top to it but it won't connect to the internet. The specs say it has built in ethernet so I don't see the problem. I also tried connecting wirelessly to a network signal that my sister connects to and it says my computer is connected to it but the internet still doesn't work. My computer has built in b/g and my sister's has n if that makes any difference.

You still need to set up an account somewhere in your system that allows your computer to be logged into one of the servers and to tell your computer which server to log onto. You need to go to your Internet Set up Wizard and see if that doesnt prompt you for what you need to get on the www
Call your router manufacturer, there are too many possiblilities for the cause of this problem.
the wireless internet source is probally n only so you could buy a n card
Hint: You do NOT use a phone cable to use in an Ethernet port. You need an Ethernet cable to connect to your laptop and router.

Also you might want to check to see if your ISP uses special IP address numbers because they will need to be added in manually to your laptop. If you call them, I am sure they can walk you through that process.
