I have a laptop that I purchased in 2000. It is running Windows 98. Can I install a wireless NIC?

My intention is to connect to WiFi hotspots. I only have 128 MB Ram. Can I do this? What is the best fequency - a,b or g? Once I install card, how do I get it to scan for wireless networks?

Yes. I see no reason why not.
Do you have a free PCMCIA slot in your laptop?

The wireless card will come with a CDROM. Run the setup program on the CDROM, and it will install the software for your card and set up your internet connection. If your wireless card didn't come with a CD, then you have to visit the manufacturer's website and download the driver for your network card. That's what I did after I purchased a network card from ebay.

Since most newer laptops have builtin network connections, most wireless cards are unneeded in today's laptops. These cards were designed for older computers just like yours, so I see no reason why it would not work with your laptop. :)

PCMCIA network cards can heat up quite a bit. Check yours. Use the internet and disconnect after about 30 minutes and take out the card and see how hot it is. If yours gets very hot, then make sure that you pull it out when you're not using the internet, because the heat generated by this thing can damage the hard drive if it's situated nearby. In some laptops the hard drive is right next to the PCMCIA slot. The number one thing that kills hard drives is heat.

If you have Windows 98 first edition with Internet Explorer 5, then I recommend you to upgrade to Internet Explorer 6.
Download IE6 SP1 for Windows 98 here and install:

As long as you find a NIC that has drivers for Win 98 and your system meets all the other requirements you should be good to go.
Yes, you can install a wireless card in this laptop. I would go for a wireless g card. It fits into the pcmcia slot on the side of your computer. I'd also suggest that you install more memory and load a copy of Windows xp on this laptop.

yes. you can use a "b" adapter. you need to install a utility to connect using a win98. using that you can scan and connect
Umm... It may be a bit difficult if you're runnining Windows 98. Most hardware, today need to be supported by a later OS, (Like Windows 2000 and later.) If you're going to purchase a wireless NIC for your laptop, I strongly suggest you do two things: Go to the store and pick out the wireless NIC and then go to that manufacter website and see if the drivers of that NIC card can run on windows 98, or upgrade your OS to Windows 2000, or later. (Such as Windows XP). Tip: If you're going to upgrade your OS, check your systems hardware such as Memory, processor speed (in MHz), and hard drive space. Make sure the OS you wish to install can handle run on your system. I hope this information I provide you is good for you. Good luck!
You can do it, but windows 98 requires specific drivers. Make sure which ever NIC you buy supports 98.

Given that the system is almost 8 years old. You might consider investing the $500 for a new one from Dell.
