On my keyboard I have a function button, it is an F in a square & allows each key to have 2 or 3 uses. However.it is constantly turned on & whenever I need to type I need to hold down the function button, so to get the desired input to the screen. How do I switch this off??

or elsse
Go into Device Manager (Right Click "My Computer" then to Properties, click on "Device Manager TAB)
Click + sign next to Keyboard, highlight the entry under it and hit Remove Button. Say YES.
Reboot. Windows will re-install the driver. May fix it.

sounds like a broken key. just get a new keyboard and replace the other. Laptop keyboards are not repairable.

your numberlock button is switched on.
