I have a IBM Thinkpad T-60 for work and they are great! Very quick, powerful computers.
I am currently using a Toshiba Satellite, and this is my second one (simply for upgrade, not because the first one died). I love the Toshiba computers.
Do not get a Compaq. I have never had any luck with them. I bought one for college, and all four USB ports died in the first two days. I brought it back, and traded for this Toshiba.

You should buy a Toshiba Satellite A100-1301D because Toshiba makes the best laptops. Intel Dual Core is better than AMD Turion.

I've owned both Toshiba and Dell. I like Toshiba for customer service. Dell seems to be more favorable to business than to individuals with customer service. AMD and Intel have been playing one upsmanship for years. The speed tends to be a blur where one generally is atop the other for a time. It is like watching a neck and neck horse race. Right now I believe that Intel has the fastest but tomorrow that could change. When your spending that much money on a laptop be sure to get a great warranty. Toshiba offers a no hassle upgrade. Even if you drop it and crack the screen they will replace it. Get the most bang for your buck. Do your home work and Good Luck.

The difference will be in the ability of the computer to play games, its weight (an important part to consider if you will be taking it to the library or back and forth to class), wireless ability, hard drive size (for storing personal photos and movies), and so on.

Intel core 2 duo is the top of the line. The Dell Vostro is the best choice for saving money and getting top options.

As I know HP and Dell are the best in laptops for a long time and they are very reliable too. I trusted HP and I bought a HP laptop 2 years before, and still like the day I bought it. Didn't even have to service it at least once up to now.
I recommend you to buy a HP (with experience) or Dell laptop.
