Why my laptop screen sometimes turn into green or red?

My laptop is new one. When I was typing and suddenly the screen turn into totally green (sometimes red), nothing else on the screen. So I try to press any button including off button but thereis totally no respone at all unless I take off the laptop battery and reload again. My friends say my laptop might got spyware or virus and ask me to format my laptop. Are they right? Do I have to format my laptop? Is there any alternative? I hope anyone who expert can help me on this. Thank you.

The problem is most likely a hardware issue. The video cable sounds like it got loose which will cause intermittant video oddities (green, blue, red, etc). Sometimes rebooting will help, sometimes pressing down on the plastics in various locations help -- but in the end, the cable will need to be pushed back into place. Generally the cable could be loose in one of two locations, either underneath the plastic peice where the power button is, or the end plugged into the back of the LCD. If your feeling adventerous you could try to remove the plastic peice above the keyboard (sometimes it's held in by two screws underneath the computer, sometimes it's held in by two screws on the hinges on the back, and sometimes it's just pressed in place and you can pry it up from the edges). Once off, you will see a connector or two, usually the video connector is the largest one and is very visable. You can try to push this back into place and hope that that is all it was. If the solder got loose, then your talking a motherboard repair, if the cable was just loose (you can try to pull it off and then put it back on to help the connection) then you will hopefully be ok. If the cable is loose on the back of the LCD, I'd rec'd taking it to a shop to have done - though many shops don't know how to do this anymore --- they just ship them off to depots now.

Formatting your computer won't do anything as this is not a software issue. The plastic peice above the keyboard is your best bet to check first -- I could give you more details if I knew the exact model of the laptop as to how to remove it, but again, it's usually a couple of screws or just pressed into place and being firm but gentle can just pop it up and you can see what your looking at.

I've seen this many times and it's usually just a simple fix. If your uncomfortable doing this yourself, taking it to a shop and asking for a diagnostics of the problem and maybe describing what I've told you might help... if it's not a loose cable then the repair of the problem could get costly so a lot would depend on the age of the laptop.. paying $70 to have someone take a look and push the cables back into place might be worth it before just tossing a laptop.

Edit: As I just reread your posting -- if it's new, yes take it back if brand new .. or take it in for warranty repair - you might be without the laptop for a week but it would certainly be worth it to have a fully functional laptop
