Need laptop advice?

I have never owned a laptop before and going to buy my first laptop before school opens. I was wondering if anyone out there could give me advice on what type of laptop model and brand I should get like apple etc? and What is the most important thing I should be looking for in a laptop such as memory etc. when I go shopping around for one.

All I know about laptops is to look for one with a lot of memory, but i'm not sure how much memory is enough memory in GB.

Basically all I want is a good stable laptop that doesn't crash easily, alot of RAM/memory and is fast.

Everyone's advice will be greatly appreciated and taken into consideration. Thank you!

Most would recommend an Apple simply because of its reliability (myself included), but you do pay a higher premium. If you do choose an Apple, look into a macbook.

As for specific specs, the recommend minimum for RAM is 512MB, but you should have at least 1GB of RAM. Harddrive size depends on your usage, but most students can live with 80-160GB. Finally, with laptops you should really worry about graphics chips, as you can get a REALLY good one on a laptop anyway.
Get a MacBook.

no doubt about it,a DELL or GATEWAY,1 gb mem,at least 60 mb hard drive,or 80,the rest will be built around that from the factory,I am talking from my use of these two, cannot beat them, great support.Others may not agree with me but that is there right,I am running 2 m520 gateway desktop replacements laptop,1 nx570 gateway laptop, and a powerful dell desktop, all run like a champ, running 6mg dsl on all of them, hope you good luck
It is case by case
don't buy the cheapest models
They are really not portable durable laptops but rather "cute" computers for idiot women to place on a desk as furniture. never to move
Laptops are very expensive to repair
Better to spend more up front - the cheaper laptops are throw away if anything goes wrong.
If you use apple Macs - you will never be sorry if you buy a mac
Software is the issue always
If you buy a used laptop you can get good deals on older business quality laptops that are durable
Batteries last 200 charges ( 1 year) and cost about $ 100
If you do not need a battery and can plug in you often can get a very good deal that way.
Off lease - for example dell or leveno can be good
New battery and a guarantee
You will not be unhappy with a Mac
you need to look into the dell and talk to them they will know what to set you up with and take a look at then on www.dell.com
dell inspiron 1520
120GB hd
2GB RAM
core 2 duo processor 1.8Ghz +

u will be set for 3-4 years +
