i bought a macbook 2 weeks ago and the battery life has been cut in half. I only plug it in when its completely dead, so why is the battery life so crappy now?

Nowadays batteries are hardy and need to be topped off regularly, not drained and filled and drained and filled. That's exactly the sort of thing that can kill the battery. Try recalibrating it. In finder choose help>mac help and in the search field type recalibrate battery or calibrate battery for instructions on how.
