RAM help please?
so im planning to buy DDR2 1gb for the empty slot..
i went to computer store this morning and ask for upgrading.. then, the salesmen said i can't upgrade my second slot, just upgrade the first.. the second slot is no use.. im confuse..
can you give me information about this matter?.. my laptop is acer travelmate 4150.. please help me before i purchase the RAM.. give me your recommendation please..
thank you very much in advance..

looking at these specs on acer url(which is not that user friendly) the model uses DDR2
u can use DDR2... but u mentioned that ur current ram is DDR
if ur current ram is DDR then u cannot upgrade to DDR2 even on the second slot...
if originally the system is made 4 DDR2 then u can use it but if not then u can only use DDR... DDR slot is different frm DDR2 slot... DDR is a 184pin module whereas DDR2 is 240pin module... even the pin density of DDR2 is slightly higher that DDR if u run memory scan n they recommend u DDR2 then u might be mistaken abt ur current ram is DDR.
assuming that u can use DDR2 then most pc and/or laptop supports up to 1gb 4 each slot... so u might as well upgrade to SODIMM DDR2 1gb 533Mhz... no point going any higher that 533Mhz... coz that is ur motherboard bus speed supports up to 533mhz(if wht acer website specs tells it correctly)
so don't waste money on unnecessary unused capability. this does not mean u cannot use the 667Mhz or buy the DDR2 667 but it won't make much difference coz ur motherboard supports up to 533Mhz only, so that 667Mhz DDR2 will be bog down to 533Mhz speed. btw assuming that ur laptop motherboard has dual channel technology, if u wanna use this then u hafta get the sama ram size n frequency... i.e 2 DDR2 1gb 533mhz... thus dual channel will be enabled...
anyway regardless whether u can use DDR or DDR2 u should get 1gb... 4 1 slot...
p/s: check out ur acer manual 4 full product specs... to determine whch DDR does the motherboard support
lol that salesman has no idea about wat he's talking about yes you can use the second slot.
Yes, you can upgrade in the second slot.
Old school memory slots had to be matched pairs, so you needed to do one, or both, but not two different. DDR isn't like that though, and I'm sure that DDR2 will just step itself down to the DDR1 bus rate. SO you'd be faster to just do the one slot of DDR2, but a bit more memory to do both at the slower DDR1 speed.
Personally I'd just upgrade the second slot to 1GB, and then add another when you get the $$$. Faster is better, especially when you're only talking about a 256mb difference.
Hope it helps!
Computer memory capacity differs for every computer, its better to call the computer manufacturer to check the maximum RAM a system can handle..The most crucial part in memory is the frequency, even if one memory is 256 MB and the other is 1GB as long as they are in the same freq they should work (ex.333Mhz.400Mhz,etc).
wow the gut at the store is an idiot why would they have the secound slot if you cant upgrade it would be stupid just get it anyways and if it doesnt wrk u may need to put the 1gb in the first slot and the 256 in the 2nd
