Intel Core 2 Duo vs. Intel Core Duo?

What is the difference between these two models of processors in terms of performance, speed and quality, when used in a notebook computer? Also when it is called "Intel Centrino Core Duo" is it referring to the earlier or the latter of these two processor models ?

STOP . . STOP . . STOP
Pete & nuwa >> you are totally misleading !

intel core duo > 32 bit processors
t2x00 / t2x50

intel core 2 duo > 64 bit processors
t5x00 / t7x00

intel centrino duo:
this a label dished out by intel, indicating use of a combination of 3 intel products viz. i. processor > core duo / core 2 duo ii. intel chipset 915 & above iii. intel wifi card

64 bit computing is as yet evolutionary and should take awhile to standardize.

the core 2 duo is a superior product to the core duo
> simply put, generally speaking
supports both 32 & 64 bit computing

as opposed to the core duo, which cannot support 64 bit computing
but again, that's not important !

both suit you fine for engineering applications
but if it's autocad or similar, you'll have to think on different lines

check for self the various mobile processors speak for themselves,

Intel Core Duo is a dual processor. Intel Core Duo 2 is a quad processor.

The performance increase of Duo over Duo 2 is not linear. The performance increase of Duo over its predecessor was around 50%. The increase of Duo 2 over Duo is under 25%. I don't have the article that I read to support this, but I do strongly suggest you read the information on Wikipedia about the two processors.

Centrinos are watered down Pentiums. They are designed to require less power, but in turn they are unable to be used in applications that require intense processing such as CAD, Video Editing, and some games even. They are still good processors.

Update:
I suggest you do not get a Centrino processor if you are going to be using it as an Engineer. You probably will be using lots of intense applications. The only downside of this is that you will lessen your battery time. You can find larger battery packs to supplement this or keep the machine plugged in at all times. That is up to you.
Both are same.
But there is a diffrence in core2 duo and dual core

Dual core -intel 945,955,965,975
OK, first of all, Core 2 Duo and Core Duo can be BOTH a Dual Core processor.

In a basic idea, Core 2 Duo is an improved Core Duo processor (Hence the 2 in it's name.) , performance and power wise, the Core 2 Duo is faster and more energy efficient compared to the Core Duo. So it's more recommended to buy the Core 2 Duo one than the Core Duo.

As for Intel Centrino Core Duo, sadly, it can be both. when a laptop is labeled as "Centrino Core Duo" it can be BOTH a CoreDuo and Core2Duo laptop. The only way to see if test the laptop and see a diagnostic program (Like dxdiag.) if it's a CoreDuo or a Core2Duo processor.

It's very confusing, it's because early Core Duo laptops are still called Intel Centrino (Which is a SINGLE core processor.)
The Core 2 Duo is an updated version of the Core Duo, and they are both dual- core chips, the Core 2 Duo is not a quad-core chip. The Core 2 Duo is faster, more efficient and provides better performance and battery life, The CoreDuo is comparable to AMD's dual core chips, the Core 2 Duo leaves them both in the dust. Centrino is pretty much just the name Intel gives to their mobile technology and applies to many of their chips.
Core 2 Duo is the top of the line, you have the 5000 series and the 7000 series. You will probably want at least a core 2 duo t7300.
Intel Core 2 Duo is better than Intel Core Duo. I'm not aware of the differences.
