If you are going to have an Internet connection why not consider the offer from PC World set up by Orange, If you take Orange Broadband for a Certain period the laptop is free. Your going to pay for an Internet connection anyway.

for a student, i would reccomend:
an ibm thinkpad with a good warranty. those r durable as hell and have a decent battery and will serve u well. I would reccomend the X series.

OR an apple Macbooks, they have a deal right now where u can get a free nano with each macbook purchase. The nice thing about this is that it comes with a crapload of software and you won't need to worry about any spyware. all the macbooks are amazingly fast, stable, and reliable.

Well, I would recommend a Dell Laptop. I got a Dell laptop for my high school graduation and it has lasted me all four years of college. You can order them on-line or on the phone and they will set it up to what your going to need it for, which in this case is school. You definitely need Microsoft office or the new vista for school and Dell will already install that stuff on your computer. They have really good computer support as well!
I'd say a MacBook, they are really small, light, they are pretty much just plain cool, and they arn't boring and depressing like some old Dell with Windows on it lol
Plus Macs have USEFULL software already on them, then you just need iWork which is about £50 as apposed to Microsoft Office for £400 or whatever... *thumbs up*
