What is a good computer for me?
Answers:
You can buy some good notebooks for between $600-800.
Look at :
www.bensbargains.net
www.dealcatcher.com
www.slickdeals.net
www.pricewatch.com
Just monitor those sites and see what shows up...
I know Office Max, Best Buy, CompUSA also have some good deals.
You should look for the following features
Dual core (Core Duo, Core 2 Duo, X2)
1GB RAM
at least 80GB HD
DVD-RW
Some suggestions...
All around good value:

Just make sure you have at least 1GB of RAM - this will make much more difference in performance. You -should- upgrade this after purchase and a lot of stores will do it cheaply or for free (at time of purchase) if you don't know how. If you do know how (it's pretty easy, look at instruction manual), you should buy it online and you'll save a lot of money.
For accessories and peripherals I recommend www.newegg.com
www.tigerdirect.com
www.zipzoomfly.com
www.frys.com
I've bought from all of the above and haven't had any problems.
Amazon.com and Buy.com are a little more expensive, but good.
Most notebooks are going to be fairly reliable. ASUS, Toshiba, Sony, Apple, rank on the top of the list. Gateway ranks fairly low.
It helps to buy from a brick-and-mortar too. I bought one from Offce Depot and they replaced it before the 30-day return period no questions asked. Typically with electronics, they'll die early or die late, so if you can make it through the first few months you're probably safe. The rest of the issues that come up are usually user/operator related or software issues.
Buy a Toshiba. They are very reliable. The customer service and support is also excellent.
XP computer.
It depends on what your usage type...
Dell have good line up of laptop and their prices are not too bad.
TigerDirect have good selections and price, too.
A good place to shop for laptops are NewEgg.com and TigerDirect.com
If you go to the laptop section (http://tinyurl.com/29c7ug), you can search by price, which I would probably do in your case.
Portability is a factor that you also need to take into consideration. You didn't specify so I didn't take that into consideration...
It's up to you how much power you want to sacrifice for price. You didn't really specify how much you would spend, but i thought this laptop was a good deal:

The Toshiba Satellite M65-S9092 is for you.
Go to a reputable computer store and ask to speak to someone who is knowledgable on laptops.
Tell them what you need the laptop to do and how much you have to spend. They will show you alternatives. Do that in 3 or 4 stores, then go on the Internet and save yourself up to 10%.
In other words, get the best that you can afford. All manufacturers have good and bad models. A shop assistant who deals with them everyday will know the best (and worst)
