Acer is great and affordable. You will need a printer to go with it and maybe a mouse, though a lot of them have a built-in mouse now, and a modem (unless the computer has a built-in modem). Try to get one with a mouse and modem built-in! Apple seems to be fine but I prefer Acer, personally. A laptop and notebook are the same thing.

Well what you need to do is, go to a computer store, ask the sales man. tell him/her what kind of computer you want, and where are you going to use it, is it just for simple projects, emails or chat. he could suggest a cheap laptop for you, thats depending on the memory of the laptop. for me as a working girl, i use sony vaio its a 1gig memory good for my projects and files.

I would recommend an Apple computer. They make the best rated laptops (Consumer Reports) and their software is very easy to use and intuitive. It is a little different once you make the switch from Windows, but it is worth it. They may seem a bit more expensive than other computers, but you get a lot such as built in camera, remote and all the great software included. I would recommemd you go to your nearest Apple store and check one out.
Dell! By far. Simply because of the customer service. I recoommend getting the Dell On Call extra support and eextended warranty, which has proved useful for hard drive crashes from hackers. Dell Inspiron 6000 has a very nice screen and design, and one battery lasted me 2 years. By far, stick with Dell, you will not regret it. Dell also has reminders of when your printer needs ink and when you need to buy a new battery, and especially right now, they have incredible deals. My Inspiron came with a free printer.
