Is my harddrive being damanged when my laptop shuts off by itself when it is plugged in.?

I believe I am having power shortages in my 50+ year old home. Whenever I have my laptop plugged in it periodically shuts off. I can hear the hard drive reeving up and then it shuts down - no warnings at all. I believe the problem to be with the wiring in my home, however, how do I know how badly this is or will damage my hard drive beyond repair? How can I check my laptop to see if some damage has already occured?

Answers:
When a computer is starting up it needs to be given the chance to shut off either by holding down the power button or using windows "Turn off computer" option. Sudden power failure for a hard drive is like sudden emergency stopping for a vehicle. Let it go on long enough and some repairs will have to be made. My suggestions get a UPS - Uninterruptible Power Supply - to prevent the power failures from harming your hard drive.
