My laptop overheats and turns itself off?

My laptop overheats and turn itself off, the fan is working as I can hear it but it does get quite hot, would a small usb fan be enough to keep it cool?

Answers:
This seems to be a common problem with Laptops nowadays. Because they are so high powered and capable of doing everything a desktop PC can do, but everything is so compact and close together that it doesn't have enough room to 'breathe' so to speak.

I have a Toshiba Satellite M50 Laptop, which is about 6 months old and it does exactly the same thing. It gets extremely hot underneath quite quickly and then after a few hours it will just switch itself off.

The problem with these Laptops is that the cooling fan is situated underneath the Laptop and so if you use it for what it's actually made for (putting it on your lap) then it covers the vent/fan and it eventually overheats and burns your legs!

I now use a USB Laptop Cooling Pad (not a fan). This is a very slim flat pad, about the same size as a laptop, with 3 built-in fans. It just slides underneath your Laptop and keeps it cool. It's been a godsend to me and it wasn't expensive to buy either.. under £10, so you might want to look into getting one for your Laptop and see what happens.

If it still overheats and switches itself off even with the Cooler fans going then there is something else wrong with your Laptop and you should get it looked at by a techie.
Where are you using the laptop and for how long. If you have it on your "lap" or on the bed for extended periods you may be restricting the airflow. If it is on a desktop, counter or table your fan may not be working as well as it should. See about getting the fan replaced.
no i think you need to get it looked it,it sounds like the heat sink is not making contact with the processor
Time to C a Tech Spec.
The processor chips is mounted on heat sink to control temparature. If surface of heat sink is dirty or lost of dust accumulated inside and it can not freely remove heat than this can happen. Or if heat sink is detached or the chips has developed problem and getting over heat. You need to chat with the pc manufacturer's technical support. Or call them on 1 -800 number find from the website.

For example - if the laptop is DELL make then go to web site www.dell.com and find the customer help. Similarly for HP or Toshiba computer.
