"How do I play a DVD on my laptop? Ever since I upgraded to Windows xp I have not been able to play a DVD, why
Answers:
You need a "DVD DECODER" there are some that are free on the internet. Power DVD should have it also look and see if VLC player works
Is your optical drive a DVD-supporting drive? Does it ready any CDs at all? Have you tried more than 1 DVD? From the sounds of it, either the drive doesn't support DVDs, won't ready any discs at all, or you're trying to watch a badly scratched disc.
Most computer manufactures provide the DVD player software. When you upgraded to the XP you also needed to upgrade the software for you DVD device. Most manufactures will provide this upgrade off the net. Go to your manufactures web site and go into support and you should find what you need.
You don't have a DVD compatible drive. You probably just have a standard CD-R/RW drive in your laptop. You must have a DVD compatible drive. You can purchase one on eBay for about 30-50.00 (good brand). Unless you know you have one in your computer. If that's the case it may be defective or damaged. The way you can tell is by looking at the cover of the drive it should have the DVD symbol. You may also have driver problems...
-Right click on My Computer
-Select Device Manager
-Check the list to see if your CD drive has a yellow or red
mark on it. If not, try to reinstall drivers from your manufactures website.
Most of the time though, you don't have a compatible drive when it does something like that.
Good Luck
