if so, what kind of card or hardware do i need to buy. I pay for cable, so i am not trying to get it for free...i just want to watch it on my laptop. i.e.- a pcmia card with a coaxial plug connector and special software

It includes crude but functional software.
For software, I like Snapstream.net which also sells h/w, s/w bundles.
You may need to adjust the color and contrast on your laptop's LCD screen to get it to look right.
