Is it bad for my processor to be running this hot?

My MacBook Intel Core 2 Duo 2.16 processor is running at 185 F (84 C) whenever I am converting songs in iTunes. Is this too hot?

Answers:
Yes, heat is always bad. If the CPU fan comes on, that's a good thing .. if not, you're in trouble.

If you want to keep things even cooler, try using a laptop cooling pad (w/ fan).

The on-board cd/dvd drive also generates lots of heat, so using an external USB drive will help too.
Yes. Is your internal fan working? That is a dangerously hot temperature for a computer, and it should not be that way.
Yes, I bought a cooling pad that sits under my laptop and plugs into the USB drive. It works REALLY well. I bought it from Best Buy for $30. THe heat is bad becuase excessive heat causing electrinic componets to fail.
Good Luck
No, and remember, Doing anything that is Ram Intensive will cause them to run warmer, especially if you are low on the amount of ram you have installed.
Don
Of course that its bad it shouldnt be higher than 60c it will make shorter your procesors living time, nevertheless the living time of a core duo its too long so dont worry about it

Intel Core 2 Duo processors currently have a problem when reporting accurate temperature readings. The last time that I read a technical bulletin about the issue, it was still not resolved for the already existing Core 2 Duo processors. After reading the bulletin, it made sense to me that the temperature readings were inaccurate, since 84 C is up to twice the normal temperature range.

Your processor may very well be running very hot when converting songs. It is just not certain exactly how hot. Until some kind of update/workaround is issued to resolve this bug, I would recommend getting an external laptop cooling pad if you are concerned about the heat issue.
