I think ive broken my laptop, and i havent got a clue what to do. please help me.?

i just turned it on and it came up with a worrying message saying it couldnt log me onto my usual account because of a maybe corrupted file or something. it put me on a temporary account. when i logged off i tried going back to my normal account. it worded... but it came up with a completly different background, desktop, but a few of the things i downloaded where still there. this isnt even my computer. its my dads, but he got a new one so he gave this one to me. im thinkning of maybe just starting a brand new account, and deleting the so called corrupted one. and just start everything again, and download more wisley.or reboot the whole computer, and start everything back over. any ideas please help. i also have mcafee security, and it runs regular checks and alerts me to things that are wrong. this hasnt happened. i just need help. any ideas welcome. thanks.

If it's only a problem with your user account then no need to reinstall Windows (unless you want to!). I'd create a new account for yourself then copy your files from your old profile to the new one. If your new account has admin rights then you just need to go into c:\documents and settings\<%username%> and copy files from your My Documents and Desktop folders. Once done delete the corrupt account and wollah!

It doesn't sound like a virus problem. It could have been caused by something as simple as the filename to a cookie reaching too long a length.

Good luck!
Hold it about 3 feet above the ground and drop it on the floor make sure ot lands flat that should do the trick
did you rename some of the standard stuff (e.g. my documents) or so? renaming of standard folders might cause such problems. best would be to create a new account.
Do you run a virus check daily? also check for addware and cookies, they can cause problems, as a last resort, try System Restore in windows (System Tools) that may help.
Probably easiest to start a new account, you may find the odd thing pops up later, either that or try setting your computer back a few days using system restore, it occassionaly fixes problems like yours. Start > help > system restore ( i think)
this could fix everything. If you have windows xp go to start>accessories>system tools>system restore. Then follow the instructions and click on the date it shows you or the day before this happened. Then follow the instructions.
By the way this will not delete any saved work only programs you installed after the date you restore to.
Hope this helps.
no worries, it's not a major problem! it's just windows file corrupt. The easiest way to solve is backup all your data then reformat it. Install the windows (or other OS) again. Recover all your backup data.
my guess would be its a windows thing - it had a bit of a nervous breakdown and has now recovered
when something like this happens, windows disables a feature called active desktop
right click the desktop and choose properties click on the desktop tab and reselect the original background. alternatively, you could try a systems restore to a point just before the problems started.

go to start then in the run box, type msconfig
launch system restore
check the restore my computer to an earlier time button
choose a date - only the dates in bold have restore points
click next, sit back and wait
hopefully that will sort things out for you
Good luck

mate, try this
Start>control panel>user accounts
delete all accounts, make a new account
add pics, password and thats it, that should do the trick

Ps. you cant delete the account on the user you are on eg if you are on the account Max, you cant delete it from the user accounts as it is in use and also make sure that the account you will make is administrator as that will help you to add or delete new accounts.
delete the account that you were on from your new one and that should do the trick.
Sounds like it is time to reformat with the recovery disk.
