compare specs .. get the best hardware for your money and forget the name ...
I would go with the DELL.
I have a DELL and love it.
some of my friends have the same problem, then they went to a professional and now they dont have that problem any more.
If you're going to go with Dell, don't go with the Inspiron line. I suggest you go with Vostro. It's meant for small business but anybody can buy the laptops.
They're currently having a small sale

I recommend Core2Duo chips (T5470 should be fine), at least 1GB of Memory, Windows XP (Vista at the moment is not very good of an Operating System)
It's a really good computer (The Vostro line is sturdy and well protected internally) at well under your $1200 limit. Dell Vostros also have a 30 day money back guarantee (with no restocking or shipping fees)
No I think that would be your best choice, you could also check out Dell small business for the Vostro line, same unit in basic black but starts out at a lower entry price.
You should get a Toshiba Satellite M65-S9092 for clothing design upload and for editing large format pictures. You shouldn't get a Dell because they have a lot of problems, and they're made with low quality parts. Toshiba, on the other hand, makes high quality laptops at a decent price.
