Had the same problem, now I install this http://www.ebookorama.com/superfast-comp...
on all my computers.
It will shut your PC off in 3 seconds, also very good for rebooting, and best of all, Free :)
pass it on.
How many programs does it have to close/shutdown? Maybe you should review your start menu.

Also, as we work along, if you have your computer set for automatic updates, these are saved to disk at shutdown.
here is how you can edit your system registry to make you shut down time shorter
note: when you get to the website the intructions will be near the bottom.
First of all, make sure you have the most recent updates as this is 99% chance of being software related.

Most likely cause is a program that is doing something and your operating system (Windows I assume) is waiting for the program to stop. This is usually a utility program or an anti-virus program, but it could also be a hint of spyware. Try running Ad Aware (free download at www.lavasoftusa.com) to get rid of spyware or buy a well-rated spyware removal program and run it to clean up anything like that.

If it's not spyware, try uninstalling your antivirus software and any utilities programs (Norton Utilities for example) and see if that solves the problem. Then re-install and see if the problem is still there.
maybe u had a lot of programs running at the time...and u have an old computer
hi there,

based on a few experience, you can 'kill' the shutdown process by following this instruction found on this page
http://xperiencexp.blogspot.com/2005/02/...

but, i guess this is provided that your pc is working in a 'normal' way and just that there are too many programs and applications are required to be closed before the whole shutdown is completed.

if on the the other hand, the slow shutdown is caused by virus or some application that refuses to be closed, then you may need to do some investigation to pin point the cause.

if this is the case, you may want to press CTRL+ALT+DEL to see which are the programs that are using a lot of memore (see under MEM USAGE column). Then end that huge application, if any present. see if this would work.

good luck
Before you shutdown, launch Windows Task Manager by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete and click on the Processes tab.

Make a note of all the processes that do not have the following as the User Name:-

SYSTEM
LOCAL SERVICE
NETWORK SERVICE

Then click on then one at a time and press the End Process button. Gradually by a process of elimination you you should find one that takes much longer to shutdown the rest.

That should help to try and find a solution.
Other from these reason from above.
