What is the best laptop in the market now?

If you only need is browsing the web for your research, you could do this on an older Pentium 3 for $350, especially if you have a tight budget. Browsing the web only needs 128MB of RAM. I don't know how large your documents are, but if mostly text then even a 20GB Hard drive should be more than enough. As far a dragging it around you should look at the size and the weight and perhaps battery life, if there aren't outlets where you are going to be using the laptop.
As far as best laptop goes that is mostly subjective. HP makes the most laptops (almost 5 million in 2006), followed by Dell, Acer, Lenovo (IBM) and Toshiba. They all make a quality product and have decent customer support. So, I would pick a couple models from a couple of the vendors that have the feature set you require and compare them. I'd also decide on the budget to keep it in your price range. Since, Acer is not as well known their prices tend to be cheaper.
I like my Toshiba. My wife has a Dell that has stood the test of time, too.
i've had my lenovo/ibm laptop for a year now, and it's alright, i like using it.
I just bought my first one in Jan. from Dell. I like it so far. Toshibas and Sonys are supposed to be good ones too. Dells are priced very reasonably though ! They have new Inspirons in tons of colors !
The best laptop in the market now is a Toshiba Satellite M65-S9092.
