Well yes. I bought an old USB 2 CD burnner at a thrift store and removed the CD drive. Inside the box was a ribbon connector and USB interface hardware. I connected my trusty harddrive to the ribbon connector. Plugged everything up and the drive was seen right away.
Yep. Get an external usb enclosure that holds a 3.5" disk. If you have a serial ata instead of ide, make sure you get an enclosure that supports it. Then you've made an external hard drive like the ones you buy.
A hard drive enclosure, A hard drive enclosure, A hard drive enclosure !
Using an external USB connected hard drive enclosure would be the simplest.

Actually, yes, there is.

This is very similar to one that I purchased a while back from outpost.com - it's very easy to use and setup. There are no drivers to install, just make sure the drive is connected BEFORE you plug it in to the USB slot. If the cable has a power source, make sure it's on the harddrive first before turning on.
