It's a fairly common problem in many laptops. The heat generated by the components packed much closer than usual is enormous.
It has only one way out - the underside of the laptop.
The heat causes the laptop to under-perform and become sluggish.

the best thing you can do is buy a desktop computer. Seriously, or buy a fan that goes underneat your laptop. quit putting it on your legs, that makes you impotent.

make sure you place ur laptop on a flat table and not on the bed or on the pillow or on ur lap. that gives way for better ventilation.
Plus try adaware to get rid of all the adware and spyware in the PC. This alone could make ur PC much faster.
check the fan and for being sluggish run some scans and clean up unused/unwanted junk
have you ever cleaned the inside?... sometimes dirt makes your computer overhead and lack performance
mine gets hot too..but then thats cause i am usuin a crappy adaptor..if it workin slow see if it needs to be defraged.and plus u can get that fan mat thing for the over heating, i think it like 100 bucks...
Yeah I have a laptop and the heat is also a problem. Really laptops aren't meant for the lap. You need to sit them on a surface, like a desk or table and the heat problem goes away. You should invest in one of those wooden lapboards to sit your laptop on top of. Now the sluggish problem is because you lack memory. You either need to purchase more memory for your laptop or remove some files you don't need and use. Also run a disk clean up on the regular and invest in a spyware remover program.
my friend had the same problem and took it to a computer repair shop and all they did was put a cooling pad under it and it started working perfectly.
You may have a lot of spyware.

Also, with the heat, make sure the fan is not being blocked by your lap or anything else.
Find the fan, usually on the bottom and make sure it is always free from obstruction.
Mine does the very same thing, and so far I've found that...
1) The vents are actually on the bottom of my laptop (lol) that is why the bottom gets so hot. You'll just want to make sure you only use your laptop on a flat, solid surface so it doesn't overheat (in other words, keep the vents open!)
2) I have a severe RAM deficiency! Small amounts of RAM can really slow down your computer, no matter how fast it may have seemed in the beginning (when you had little files on it and less applications to run in the background). Do some homework, an upgrade may be in order!
