Secure?? Does this mean another person can log into my network?

I set up my wireless network the other day, and secured it. Today, I noticed two odd things: I notice when I connect to it, the key is already there and all I have to do is click connect. Its in bullets but the key is already there I don't have to put it in. The second thing i noticed is just to see just how secure it is I decided to put in a different figure for the key to see if it will connect and it did! Does this mean that my neighbor can pick up my network and put just anything in the key box and connect to it although I secured it? How do I fix this? I thought it was secure.

Did you punch in a key your self its usually a WEP key 10digit or 26digit depending on which you used. You can use the 10 digit and 99% of the time they are not going to get in. But if you tried on your computer your computer may have bumped the changed key and auto connected using the other key. It will go down your wireless list until it finds a connection. But that will only work on a computer that already has the key to begin with. If someone does not have the key they can not log on to your wireless network. Try connecting to your network with another computer that does not have the key and try different keys to log on it will not log on. I have a laptop and if i move the main connection to the bottom, I can try to connect to my connection with a different key it will try then it will move down the list of known connections til it connects (if it can).,.You can also look to see if your using windows to manage your wireless it will say (secured ) or padlock type note. If it says that your are pretty much safe from the average computer user...THanks
It sounds like it really isn't secure or the key you put in was replaced by the old one. If your router has a configuration software you can use, I would recommend running it and going over the security steps 1 step at a time.

It very well may mean the neighbor can get in but you can't be for certain unless they actually try it or you use a different system to try to access the wireless.
Nope. Your neighbor cannot pick up your wireless network if it is secured and you have a keycode..which you should have really only have to enter once. Randomly, like if you manually disconnect the connection yourself and then press connect again, it will ask for your key SOMETIMES. The wireless network is just making it a lot easier for you because that key code is like 50 characters long!
Typically once you type the number in your laptop, it will stay there unless you remove it. so if you just typed another number in - it still will pick up the connection. You really need to delete the first number (under available networks) and then try entering a different one.
when you connect it will say secured or unsecured. Also when you connect and it asks you for a key you have the option to save password so windows will save it for you and you'll see the astrics filled in already and all you do is push connect.

You shouldn't be able to change it and put anything if it is indeed secure, but again when connecting it will tell you
If you enabled wireless security in your router with a passkey...then its secured...

the reason why the passkey was already there is because your computer automatically saves the information after you connect to the network the first time. although why you were able to enter an invalid passkey and still get in is beyond me.

usually the safest way to block a home wireless network is like this:

1. Disable SSID Broadcast...all other computers will have to know the name of your network before they can get access (and some network cards can't even see it)

2. Enable WEP or WPA-PSK encryption (the passkey)...the latter is better than the former as there are tools to crack WEP in a matter of minutes. a 10 or more unit password (that's random) is reccomended

3. Enable MAC address filtering...only allow your computer's MAC address to have access to the network
