Would you buy the protection insurance plan on computer?
They offer a 4 yr accident/warrenty plan for about $400 total price. Is this a good idea? or would we be wasting money, and better to just take our chances that nothing will go wrong
Answers:
Normally I argue against add on warranties, especially on a PC. You rarely get your monies worth. Especially PCs where technology changes radically in four years.
Be sure to buy a locking mechanism for leaving the laptop in the dorm.
Having said all that, for a student carrying a unit to school every day does the accident plan cover dropping accidents, if so I might buy it for peace of mind. If it covers theft also, I'd certainly consider it.
save ur money...dont do it..
if it covers things like it being dropped and many accidental things, then maybe... otherwise, you're buying a guarantee for it to fail.
I've never bought a protection plan for a computer.
Typically with chips and components, they'll fail in the first few hundred hours of service, if they get past that, they'll most likely give you a long life... Anytime I get a new computer, work or home, I leave it on 24/7 for a week or two (not as easy with a laptop). If it does fail in this period, it's within 30 or 90 day 'exchange' periods where they just swap out the 'lemon'
Personally, I think you'd be better off putting the money you'd spend on this 'insurance' in an account to hold for the time should a new computer be needed.. remember, technology is always changing, the computer you buy will be outdated once you get out the door, if not already.
generally extended service plans on most electronics aren't worth it. Personally I wouldn't get it, but then again, if something goes wrong with it, I can fix the computer myself 99% of the time.
If your son isn't knowledgeable enough about fixing computers, realize that he will have the college's IT staff available to help him in case something does go wrong, and most of their work will be free or cheap in cost.
Id say if you can afford to do so then do so. Its better to have and not need then to need and not have. With laptos you never know what could happen. may get liquids on it or for any other reason get damamged.
My brother just replaced a motherboard on his laptop ($200).
If something breaks and you're not too scared to fix it yourself, then it's a waste of money. Save your money. And if something ever goes wrong, chances are the parts will cost less to replace than paying for the insurance plan.
By the time you need the extended warranty you will be able to buy the parts for it at about 10% of the original cost. Do you think they sell you the warranty to lose money?
My parents bought me the Protection plan. It is better to be safe then sorry. Everyone makes mistakes.
Though i would try to get a 3 year becaused that 4 is a waste of time.
