Just turn the router on and wireless will be transited atomatic out round your hosue and just turn the Wifi mode ON, on your laptop then it will pick the signal up and in Vista go to Start?Connect to>and connect to the signal found.
You want a Wireless MODEM router, this will just plug straight into your exisiting phone line (just like your modem).
Setup the router, follow the wizard if necessary & then your router will broadcast your connection wirelessly, which your laptop will be able to receive.

I have just bought a wifi laptop and in order to connect to the Internet with it along side my desktop I had to get a wireless router (Netgear DG834G 54Mbps Wireless Route) which i incidentally got free from AOL for being a loyal customer.
In order to install wireless you first have to make a physical connection to a computer so this could either by your laptop or some other desktop in your property. Plug in the Ethernet cable in to your laptop or desktop, plug the other end into the wireless router and also connect the router to the telephone line with the supplied equipment. Then run the disc. When you've followed the necessary instruction you will be prompted to remove the Ethernet cable (should you wish to set up wireless) and then you need to follow the necessary instructions for that part.
If you plan to connect any other computers that are not wireless ready then you need to buy wireless adaptors for them. All you need to do when the routers up and running is save the network to your laptop then once your router is turned on your laptop should automatically connect.
Check the bios to see if the wifi feature is turned on (Enabled) and not off (Disabled) then it should work fine if not set it up using the wizard.
you connect the router to the ethernet socket on the modem useing an ethernet cable.then you plug the other end of the cable into the router "internet in socket" you should depending on which router you purchase get a full sett of instructions on a disk sit down and read and you should be ok. failing that email me.
buy a linksys wireless router from walmart or bestbuy ect. it will come with a cd rom and will do all the networking stuff for you,all you do is use the cat-5 cable it comes with(its blue and looks like a phone wire)plug it into any port in the router and the other side into your computer tower,than plug your old wire into your router and into the modem,than on your laptop you must scan for connections,and do all the security stuff and than you will be able to use the internet on your laptop,,,,,enjoy
