I have tried to use the Vaio Restore several times, however every time I try to, it says it "cannot restore, no changes have been made to your computer". I tried several dates (9-10) when I had computer troubles. Then I wiped my system to get rid of a virus then for curiosity reasons tried it again a couple days later, still with the same result. Is there a trick to make it work?

Big question buddy - did you buy the comp to check how many time you can restore it ?? Or did you buy it to do some work ?
Whats happening is that the hardware is protesting the abuse.
Stop messing around with the machine and put it to work.
Take a look at the page referenced below. I am not sure but I think that the Vaio Restore is just the XP System restore. First ensure that the system restore is on and if it indeed is then just follow the directions given in the article. Hope this helps.
