If your just looking to connect to a cable modem an ethernet out let is on the modem !!. IT LOOKS like big phone jack !Purchase an ethernet usb adaptor .(Cable in rj-45 out )Plug rj 45 , there not ex pensive into the modem and the other end into your adaptor which you then plug into a usb port. Then boot computer If your Have windows follow instructions other wise install per operating systems instructions. get cable service installed first in your home, and then you simply connect an ethernet cable (probably came with the cable modem) into the ethernet port on your laptop and you are online.

How old is your laptop,you might be better off buying a new or used laptop that is already set up for cable or DSL,check out Craigslist.com in your city,lots f good deals or get a new Acer 3680 at wal-mart for$398,it has everything and is a gret laptop
